A. HSC Artwork

Words Are Inadequate (painting)

In my work I chose to explore body language as a primitive yet powerful medium for communication. In conceptualising my idea, which arose from a personal fascination with observing people's interactions, I became increasingly interested in the way we have evolved to where body language is something we largely intuit subconsciously or ignore. I realised that in order to represent the idea of body language materially as a universal tool for communication in a world where one is blinded by speech, I had to exaggerate gesticulations and expressions and create a heightened dramatic scene.

B. A Great piece of Architecture
Guggenheim Bilbao, Frank Gehry 1997

The Guggenheim Bilbao, designed by architect Frank Gehry is fascinating as the sculptural quality of the building is as much an attraction as the art it houses and blurs the boundary between art and architecture. Its structure is as modern as it is organic and resonates within its environment, namely the Nervion River. The atypical, asymmetrical interior shapes result in unique exhibition space which enables post modern art and installations. Interestingly, the main entrance is reached by descending stairs atypically used for museums and places of significant collective importance.

C. Something beautiful

I think this photograph, taken in the 5th town in the Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore encapsulates the innocent beauty of this town. Its beauty lies in its imperfection- clustered houses, mismatching colours, old fishing boats alongside slightly refurbished ones, yet all weathered and worn. It is the visibility of this aging process, a reminder of the town's fishing and agricultural roots that draws one to its unique rustic and charming nature. Ironically a major tourist destination because of its atypical beauty now threatens the very essence of its attraction. I believe however that it is this fragility that heightens its sensory appeal and appreciation within our modern world where concepts of aging and time are considered taboo.
